This page explains how Yankee betting, a form of exotic wager, can be played, along with assessing the advantages and disadvantages of the bet type.
If you’re looking to expand the types of wagers you want to add to your betting slip rotation beyond the standard moneyline, totals, spread, and props wagers, Yankee betting may be the play for you. Most commonly used in horse race betting, Yankee betting is a type of betting accumulator that sees gamblers picking winners from across multiple events rather than a single race.
On this page, we’ll explain how Yankee bets work, show the process to follow when placing them through an online app, describe how to calculate your winnings, and assess the pros and cons of this wager type.
Yankee bets are a type of wager used to multiply winnings in a manner similar to a parlay. It consists of making 11 bets using four selections of outcomes; this results in six doubles, four trebles, and one four-fold accumulator.
Unlike a traditional accumulator bet, each of the 11 legs of a Yankee bet acts as its own wager. Yankees act as an enhanced combination of betting outcomes that offers more protection than a traditional four-leg parlay (thus a greater chance of turning a profit); it is quite similar to a round robin bet.
The term “Yankee Bet” supposedly came from an American GI who was stationed in the U.K. and made a major profit by placing this type of bet. However, no one has pinned down a specific time period when such an event occurred, though the term continues to be used as such today.
Even more ambitious is the Canadian bet (also called a “Super Yankee”), which adds a fifth potential outcome with 26 total bets. We recommend getting comfortable with Yankee betting before pursuing Canadian bets.
As we mentioned above, Yankee Bets act as an enhanced form of parlay/combination betting, using the same nominal stake for each “leg” of the wager. For example, using a $1 stake on each outcome of a Yankee would lead to a larger profit than an $11 four-leg parlay combining those four outcomes or on each individual outcome.
Because you’re effectively placing 11 bets, it’s important to keep your stakes small so your losses are manageable, especially knowing you don’t need to risk large amounts of money to win big with this bet type.
Let’s put together a Yankee bet using odds from the 2024-25 NBA season. Our four outcomes will be the Atlanta Hawks moneyline at -158, the Minnesota Timberwolves moneyline at -166, the Houston Rockets at +114, and the San Antonio Spurs at +130.
If we disburse the $11 across these four outcomes, each wager would have a $2.75 stake. Using the odds listed above, if each outcome hit, the total profit betting each line individually would be $10.10; as a four-leg parlay with a $1 stake, it would be $119.66, but a single leg missing would result in the whole bet scoring as a loss.
However, by expanding to a Yankee bet, you’re now wagering on 11 combinations of outcomes. The table below shows the potential profits from each Yankee combination as well as the total winnings (again with a $1 stake on each line):
| Yankee Bet Combination | Payout on Winning Wager |
|---|---|
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome B | $0.61 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome C | $1.49 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome D | $1.75 |
| $1 on Outcome B + Outcome C | $1.42 |
| $1 on Outcome B + Outcome D | $1.68 |
| $1 on Outcome C + Outcome D | $2.92 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome B + Outcome C | $3.59 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome B + Outcome D | $4.00 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome C + Outcome D | $6.03 |
| $1 on Outcome B + Outcome C + Outcome D | $5.87 |
| $1 on Outcome A + Outcome B + Outcome C + Outcome D | $10.86 |
| TOTAL | $40.22 |
As you can see, the Yankee bet strategy offers a chance to win more money than wagering on each of the four individual outcomes ($40.22 in profit instead of $10.10). While it doesn’t carry as high a potential return as wagering the same amount on a four-leg parlay, you have some built-in insurance, allowing you to still turn a profit if a leg or two comes up short.

You can use the Bettor In Green Parlay Calculator tool to calculate the winnings from a Yankee bet. We recommend having a pen and paper or a spreadsheet program handy to keep track of which combinations you’ve calculated and for easy totaling.
It may take a few minutes to check the odds and type them into the calculator, but the process will help paint a clear picture of potential profit amounts for each of the potential results. Once you’ve calculated the payout for each outcome, add the profit amount from each scenario to find the maximum payout amount.
Yankee betting is not always a feasible strategy, and though it comes with distinct advantages, there are also disadvantages to consider before choosing to play this bet type. Here are a few of the pros and cons of Yankee betting.
Yankee betting acts as a reasonable “middle ground” to straight wagers and parlay betting, balancing the potential risk and rewards of each type. In exchange for lowering the maximum potential return, you’re able to produce more scenarios where a payout occurs, thus increasing your chance of turning a profit.
We hope this guide has helped explain how Yankee betting works and inspired you to give it a try! If another wager type better suits your gambling goals, check out our “Betting Intelligence” pages for background information on other bets.
