** NOTE: Missouri voters approved the state’s sports betting bill in November 2024, giving the industry a one-year timetable to launch. It’s unclear at this time if Missouri will allow college sports betting, wagers on in-state teams, and/or individual player prop bets. We will update this page once the specifics are available.

Why Do Some States Block College Sports Prop Betting?

One of the main reasons states have blocked college sports betting is because they view college athletes as “amateurs,” a viewpoint that has stood since before the NCAA was founded.

However, current Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules have somewhat blurred the line in the eyes of the public, with gambling proponents arguing the ability to earn endorsement deals while in college amounts to professionalism. Others argue that because collegiate competitors are still student-athletes, their amateur status must be respected.

Another point of contention that has arisen is the cyberbullying of college athletes. According to the NCAA, 1 in 3 student-athletes has received betting-related harassment.

Let us be perfectly clear: regardless of betting laws, it is entirely unacceptable to harass any athlete over gambling. You are 100% responsible for the wagers you make, and blaming athletic performance for your gambling losses is an issue for which you should seek professional help.

Conclusion

Of the 38 states that have legalized online and retail sports betting, 21 allow betting on college player prop bets in some capacity. The sportsbooks in those states have a responsibility to student-athletes to minimize the potential for gambling-related harassment by providing fair odds and by not actively promoting college player prop markets.

We believe this is an area where sports betting laws could change in the near future (amending existing regulations to prohibit college prop gambling). However, this would be a difficult legal hurdle that would be opposed by sportsbooks and gamblers alike.

Good luck, have fun, and always gamble responsibly!
