Maine has seen moderate sports betting success since launching its industry in late 2023. This page provides an overview of the state’s sports gambling landscape.
Maine is still somewhat new to the world of sports betting, launching its industry in November 2023. There have been some hangups along the way, but as of April 2025, Maine sports gamblers have wagered nearly $700 million, resulting in more than $7.5 million in tax revenue for the state.
On this page, we’ll explore the Maine sports betting landscape by looking at the available operators, reviewing the history of the industry, and providing starting information for new gamblers. We will also look ahead to the future of sports gambling in Maine, identifying potential opportunities and areas of concern.
Maine has two online sportsbooks, though state law would’ve allowed for up to four. Each of the Wabanaki Nations (Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot) has the ability to forge partnerships with whichever sportsbook they wish; all except the Passamaquoddy (which went with DraftKings) partnered with Caesars.
Below, we’ve posted brief overviews of each bookie, though we encourage you to check out our more comprehensive review pages for more details.

DraftKings debuted in 2012 as a daily fantasy sports operator before launching its sports betting platform in August 2018, shortly after the Supreme Court overturned PASPA. Since then, it has become a sports gambling powerhouse with an estimated 32% market share in the United States.
Locally, that number is even greater. According to monthly revenue reports, DraftKings accounts for roughly 87% of sports betting handle in Maine in any given month.
DK thrives in live betting with excellent coverage of niche and mainstream sports markets. Its mobile app and website are both user-friendly, making DraftKings a solid choice for new sports bettors.
Bettor In Green’s Opinion: On the whole, DraftKings’ benefits outweigh the drawbacks, giving the bookie a slight edge in our ratings.

Caesars functions as somewhat of a “high-roller” sportsbook, with high-reaching bonuses that also have higher minimums to access. This can make Caesars a bit less reliable for novice bettors and casual gamblers, but the bookie still has a lot to offer.
The rewards program is among the best in the country and is a major point in Caesars’ favor in our ratings. You’ll also be able to live-stream NFL games through the website and mobile app, and early cashout is often available for many sports and wager types.
Bettor In Green’s Opinion: Caesars could do a bit more to balance the betting experience between serious and casual gamblers, but the bookie does an acceptable job for now. Perhaps a third online operator in the state would increase the competition level.
Whether you’re using DraftKings or Caesars, the process for placing an online sports bet in Maine is virtually identical. Here’s how you can bet on sports in Maine today:

Sports betting is legal in Maine and has been since 2022. LD 585 took more than two years to gain legislative support and approval before Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill in August of that same year; Maine launched sports betting in November 2023.
Maine law allows for up to four online sports betting skins as decided by the four Native American tribes in the state (Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot). However, three of the four tribes partnered with Caesars, leaving Mainers with just two online sports betting operators to choose from.

Below is a brief history of sports betting in Maine.
As mentioned above, there are only two online sportsbooks in Maine. While there is potential for sports betting expansion in the future, the two options available now are:
Maine briefly allowed retail sports betting at Oddfellah’s Sportsbook & Bar, which had partnered with Caesars Sportsbook. However, Oddfellah’s had been operating on a temporary license which expired shortly after the state denied the bar’s gambling application for a longer-term license.
For now, there are no retail sportsbooks in Maine. However, state law allows casinos, commercial horse race tracks, and off-track betting facilities to apply for licenses.
Once license issues are resolved, we expect retail expansion will be rapid.
Below are a few of the most common types of Maine sportsbook promotions and bonuses.
With only two mobile sportsbooks to choose from, it’s to your benefit to register with both operators if you plan to bet on sports, as this will give you the best chance of finding favorable betting odds. This is called odds shopping, and it’s an important skill to master for successful sports betting.
Here are the app store ratings for Maine’s mobile sports betting apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. These ratings are accurate as of April 2025.

In Maine, the state income tax rate of 7.15% applies to sports betting winnings. This flat rate is in addition to the 24% federal withholding tax on sports gambling.
Sportsbook operators in Maine pay a 10% tax on revenue. The money generated from sports betting taxes go to the state’s general fund as well as to gambling addiction prevention and treatment initiatives; it also covers gambling regulatory administrative costs.
Responsible gambling initiatives are all actions taken to ensure betting activities are conducted in a safe and ethical manner. This goal involves a shared responsibility between gambling operators and individual bettors.
For example, sportsbooks must abide by fair odds practices and regulations and allow users to set monetary and time limits on their accounts to reduce the risk of developing a gambling compulsion. They also must be ethical in their marketing tactics and refuse to allow individuals who have opted to self-exclude to participate in gambling opportunities.
Similarly, individual bettors should utilize the limits available to them and become familiar with the warning signs of gambling compulsion and addiction. We also strongly encourage high-risk individuals to consider entirely opting out of gambling participation.
The following state-specific resources are available to Maine bettors and their loved ones.
One of the most immediate points to address for the future of sports betting in Maine is the length of online and retail licenses. This issue has already halted retail sports betting in the state and could keep interested parties away from pursuing expansion.
Another hot topic is the potential for more online operators. State law allows four online sportsbook skins (in addition to 10 retail gambling licenses), though three of the four tribes have a partnership with Caesars, limiting competition in the industry.
Finally, online casino gambling is a hotly debated topic across the country, and while it seems unlikely in Maine until sports betting licensing is addressed, it is still a possibility on the horizon. Legalizing online casinos would likely dip into sports betting handle numbers, though tax revenue would likely increase overall.
Maine still has some work to do to help its sports betting industry grow, especially in regards to licensing processes. However, once the issues are resolved, we expect to see further successes and rapid expansion.
As a reminder, Bettor In Green has composed thorough reviews of both DraftKings and Caesars to help you find which sports betting platform is right for you. We encourage you to use both depending on which has the more favorable odds for the markets you’re backing.
Good luck, have fun, and always gamble responsibly!!
No, you cannot place sports bets at racetracks in Maine. While state law allows sports betting at racetracks and OTB facilities, there are no licensed operators as of April 2025.
